“Enemy” | Newsboys devotion
When we look in the mirror, sometimes the reflection starring back at us is our own worst enemy. If we will let them, the world will feed us lies that will beat our self worth into the ground. Culture will tell us there’s no bigger purpose in our pain, no relief for our addictions. We’re quick to convince ourselves our actions don’t matter and even quicker to blame someone else, always looking for a scapegoat and a stone to throw.
Used to think You didn’t care / Was just a pawn in the game You were playin’ / Puttin’ walls up everywhere / Never thought You heard a word I was prayin’
There will always be someone else to blame. But that’s the easy way out, the cowardly escape route. It’s much harder to bravely admit that we’ve messed up, that it’s our fault and we can’t fix what we’ve done. Sometimes the only thing that stands in the way of becoming all that God created us to be is an arrogant, distorted view of ourselves.
Are you standing in your own way? Tripping over your own feet time and time again? Often, our own pride keeps us from forgiving, loving, letting go or simply living life. Pride never leads to freedom. In fact, it holds us captive and is generally the precursor to a catastrophe.
Perhaps it’s time to allow God to strip away our arrogance and replace it with dependence on Him. After all, there’s nothing wrong with admitting we are in need of grace. If we confess, He is eager to forgive.
God desires to replace all of the unrighteousness in us that hinders us from being the people He created us to be and pursuing the purposes He predestined for us. If we will let Him, He will light our path and make the direction clear. But we have to bravely seek Him and courageously place our hand in His.
Take away the blindness / Lead me through the dark / Don’t let me fall apart / Save me from my bitterness / Show me who I am / Make me who You want me to be / I know I pushed You away / Lookin’ for someone to blame / Now I can see I’m my own worst enemy
