Daily Encouragement

DAY 98 OF 366

There is a certain drama about that shot! It was the occasion when Ahab king of Israel encouraged Jehoshaphat of Judah to go with him to attack Ramoth Gilead, against the warning of the prophet Micaiah. The random shot found its mark. It carries a message as well.

The judgement of God is inescapable. “the king of Israel disguised himself and went into battle” (1 Chron. 18:29), and the chariot commanders of the enemy sought him in vain. Even so, his disguise was of no avail. The arrow of judgement, guided by an unseen hand, pierced him “between the sections of his armour.”

The fulfilment of God’s work is inevitable: “The Lord has decreed disaster for you . . . If you ever return safely, the Lord has not spoken through me” said the prophet of God. (2 Chron. 18:22,27). To set out for battle, albeit in disguise, with that word behind you is to have no hope of return. Be it king or commander, an Ahab or a Judas, the word of God must be fulfilled (John 13:18).

God’s providence is infinitely wonderful. It crowns the impulsive acts of unknown individuals with far-reaching significance. Who was this divinely appointed executioner of the evil king?
