Daily Encouragement

One might have thought that just arriving in Rome after all the hazards on the way would have been cause enough for thanksgiving and encouragement! Doubtless this was true, and yet the highlight for Paul was “the sight of these men.” They were brothers in the Lord, and they had put themselves out to come and meet him - “the Three Taverns” was 53 kilometres from Rome, and the forum of Appius farther still, some 69 kilometres.

Next to the Lord himself the Lord’s people are the greatest encouragement. At the sight of these brothers Paul received new strength to face Rome and the prospect of further imprisonment and eventual trial. They did not have to say anything. Rome was not so cold and threatening, now that he had been welcomed with the brothers’ smiles.

There is a ministry in meeting people, welcoming them and making them feel at home. It does not call for a gift of public speaking, but it does involve thoughtfulness and a willingness to give time and effort. It is the extra effort which is not absolutely necessary, which means so much. The Roman Christians could have waited until Paul and his company arrived in the city, but instead they chose to go out to the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns.
