So Haggai addressed those who had seen the temple before its destruction, prior to the Exile. We know how they felt because, even when others rejoiced at the laying of the foundation of the new building, they wept (Ezra 3:11-13). Nothing is more discouraging than a comparing of the seemingly insignificant present with the glorious past. The older we get, the more susceptible we are to such discouragement.
What is the antidote? Just this: to give ourselves wholeheartedly to the work of the Lord today - “But now be strong . . . and work.” The appeal to do so, both in Haggai’s time and ours, rests on a firm foundation:
The constant presence of the Lord - “for I am with you,” declares the Lord Almighty” (Hag. 2:4). “I am,” not “I will be.”
The covenant of redemption - “This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt” (Hag. 2:5). And we have the new and better covenant of “eternal redemption.”
The continual work of the Holy Spirit - “And my Spirit remains among you” (Hag. 2:5). God gives us the power to do effective spiritual work.
The consummation of the divine purpose - “the desired of all nations will come . . . ” (Hag. 2:7). As Christ came, so he will come again!
No wonder Haggai said, “Do not fear . . . Be strong . . . and work.”
