James Denney has said, “There is only one religious problem in the world, the problem of sin.” This truth is vividly pictured here. We see the foolishness of sin: “Like sheep . . . ” We see the tragedy of it: “We all have gone astray” from the way of God and life, so that we are hopelessly lost. We see the deliberate action of it: “each of us has turned . . . . ” We see the personal rebellion involved in it: “to his own way.” Finally, the universality of it is emphasized: “We all . . . each of us . . . ”
There is only one answer to the problem of sin, and it is gloriously stated here. “The Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Only God can deal with sin, and he has done so in the Person of our Lord Jesus Christ. This Scripture leads us to him, as surely as it did the Ethiopian eunuch when Philip told him the good news (Acts 8:34-35). It expresses in just one sentence the wonder of the saving work which Christ has done. Its mystery, its agony, its infinite love, its wonderful power - all is here.
See all your sins on Jesus laid:
The Lamb of god was slain;
His soul was once an offering made
For every soul of man.
