Some vision of the eternal King (1 Tim. 1:17) is essential for effective service. It ensures first of all that God and his glory is the supreme object of that service. The servant becomes an ambassador and does not speak of himself, but of “the Holy One of Israel.” “I suppose you are going to China to convert the Chinese?” remarked someone to William Chalmers Burns, pioneer missionary to that country. “I am going to China,” he replied, “to glorify God.”
Such a vision humbles a man under God’s mighty hand. He sees himself as completely unworthy of and unfit for the Lord’s service. He learns his utter dependence upon the cleansing from sin which only comes from God’s altar. He is available to serve with “no strings attached” - “Here am I. Send me!” (Isa. 6:8) The vision enables him to face hardness, hostility and hypocrisy undaunted.
Before God’s servants go into the world to “make disciples of all nations,” they must bow before the King and hear him say, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me . . . ” So we pray:
Send men whose eyes have see the King,
Men in whose ears his sweet words ring.
Send such Thy lost ones home to bring,
Send them where Thou wilt come.
