“As for me, the Lord has led me” - or, as the old version put it quaintly, “I, being in the way, the Lord led me.” In these words Abraham’s chief servant recognises the guidance of God and bows down and worships him. There is a beauty about every aspect of this story, which describes the search for Isaac’s bride. There is a wonderful naturalness about the way God guides us. He directs the paths of those who acknowledge him in all their ways (Prov. 3:6).
The servant was sensitive to the leading of the Lord, as his whole attitude demonstrates. His subjection to his master and his total dedication to his interests dominate his every move, making him impatient of anything which might delay the fulfilment of his purpose. The servant is a man of prayer, a true worshipper, and full of gratitude to God. There is an attractive humility about him, and he fades from the picture as he points the bride to the bridegroom.
Wells and camels and even beautiful maidens may come and go, but the Lord still leads his servants today as he did in Abraham’s time. How important it is that they have the same attitude as this servant who lived long ago.
