Between the 8th and 11th centuries, Islamic expansions left a profound mark on Algeria, introducing Islam and Arab culture. In the 19th century, French colonial rule introduced Western and socialist ideologies, shaping Algerian culture and societal norms.

Algerians gained independence from France in 1962, setting off political instability, cultural infighting, and Islamic extremism.

Algerian Christians face systemic persecution, with laws prohibiting non-Muslim worship and severe penalties for blasphemy and proselytizing. Nonetheless, Christian gatherings comprised of Arab, Berber, and foreign believers demonstrate remarkable unity and contribute to a vibrant expression of faith within the nation. Notably, the Kabyle Berber people are leading the Gospel charge.

Prayer Points to Consider:

• Pray for Christians in the nation to be emboldened and empowered by the Holy Spirit to evangelize and multiply. Ask for the reopening of closed churches and for those who have grown discouraged due to persecution to experience a fresh empowerment and sense of God’s presence personally, in their families, and corporately with others.
• In Jesus’ Name, speak open doors for the Gospel, bringing to nothing laws that prohibit proselytizing and what are considered blasphemy laws against Islam that have caused many believers to be involved in legal matters or imprisoned.
• Pray for these imprisoned believers to be released and for those still in prison to be comforted and protected, recalling God’s Word to their minds, realizing His felt comfort, and being a light in the midst of darkness.
• Pray for peace between Morocco and Algeria as tensions grow between these nations and for the healing of relations with France.
• Pray for Algeria’s government, the education system, economic development, and for national security to become more conducive to all its citizens and the spread of the Gospel.

Dear Loving Father... I come before You today to lift up the nation and people of Algeria. I pray for Your children who are suffering persecution to be encouraged and emboldened by Your Spirit to go boldly into Algeria’s darkest and seemingly impossible corners to reach people who are hungry and waiting to hear Your Good News. Go ahead of them, Father, prepare hearts! Give people who have never heard Your truth to have ears to hear and hearts to receive. May many signs and wonders be done in the Name of Above All Names, King Jesus, to demonstrate Your love and draw many to Yourself. It is in Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen!
