Day 19: Trust

Read

For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. –Isaiah 55:9

Connect

When God tested Abraham’s faith, Abraham faithfully followed His instructions.

“Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.” –Genesis 22:2

Without question, when Abraham woke up the next morning, he saddled the donkey and chopped the wood. Isaac, who helped carry supplies, accompanied him to Moriah.

Abraham consented to God’s request because he trusted that God knew what He was doing. Abraham was willing to sacrifice his only son because God asked him to.

But before he could do it, God intervened.

“Don’t lay a hand on the boy!” God said.

As it turned out, God just wanted to know the depth of Abraham’s faith. God wanted to know there was nothing Abraham would withhold. And Abraham didn’t argue.

“Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying, ‘Stop, you’re doing it wrong!’” –Isaiah 45:9

No—the clay lets the maker be the maker, just like Abraham allowed God to be God.

The story foreshadows the sacrifice God would make of His own son, for your sake. But it also illustrates just how trustworthy God is.

It reminds us that there’s a reason for everything He does, that there’s meaning in all that He allows—even when it seems senseless.

Like an unexpected breakup. Or a death, a divorce, or a disappointment.

Situations that don’t make sense to you serve a very important purpose—a purpose He doesn’t yet need you to know.

What He needs is for you to trust Him.

Do you?

Pray

As much as I want to know why I’ve suffered and struggled, I also want to trust that You know what You’re doing. Thank You, Lord, for using my life to help fulfill Your perfect plan. Please help me to humbly do all that You ask me to do. I trust You.

Reflect

Are you ready to exchange your uncertainty for faith? What’s the hardest part of trusting God’s process, even when you don’t understand it? What might make trusting Him easier?
