The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Year

DAY 155 OF 365

Week 23. Day 1. Ezekiel 24-28.

Ch 24-32 continue the messages of judgment from ch1-24. The turning point in Ezekiel will come in chapter 33 when Jerusalem falls, after which Ezekiel’s mouth is opened to speak prophecies of hope.

Eze 24 The siege of Jerusalem

●What happens in Jerusalem? (v1-14)

●What happens to Ezekiel? (v15-18)

Bonus: Why do you think these event are recorded together?

In this passage both Ezekiel’s wife and the temple are described as being ‘the delight of your eyes.’ (v16, 21). The death of Ezekiel’s wife symbolises the tragedy of the destruction of the temple

After prophecies largely of judgment, the turning point in Ezekiel is chapter 33 when Jerusalem falls, after which Ezekiel’s mouth is opened to speak prophecies of hope.

v27 Ezekiel is promised that his mouth will be opened (to speak prophecies of hope) when a fugitive comes and reports the fall of Jerusalem. Remember 3:36-37 when his mouth was shut. Ezekiel does have messages of hope, but they are hope after judgment. This fugitive arrives in 33:22

Ch 25 begins a section of oracles against the nations, up to ch 32. In Isaiah the purpose of these was primarily to discourage the people from looking to these nations for support instead of the Lord. Here in Ezekiel the purpose seems to be to show that even though God uses the nations around Israel and Judah to judge them, he still judges the nations’ wicked behaviour.

Ch 27-28 Lament over Tyre

In 28:11-19 Tyre is described as having sinned in Adamic/Edenic terms. So, we can use this passage to learn more of Adam and Eden.

●How does this passage expand on the description of Eden given in Gen 1-2?

●What more do we learn of Adam?

NOTE: Days 1-5 of each week contain the scripture reading for that week. Day 6 has just the 'key chapters'. If you want a briefer version of this plan that still takes you through the whole Bible, you could just read the key chapters featured on day 6. Day 7 has the podcast video where we discuss the week's reading.

About this Plan

The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Year

The Bible OverBrew is a friendly virtual book group, helping you read the Bible in big chunks, preferably with a mug of tea! Maybe you've tried to read through the Bible before, but gave up when it felt confusing or too intense? We are here to help you! We provide notes and questions to guide your reading, and note ‘key chapters’ if you don’t have time to read it all. In our podcast at the end of each week we draw out the key themes, and how it all points to Christ. We’d love you to join us!
