The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Yearنموونە
Week 23. Day 3. Ezekiel 34-37.
Ezekiel 34-37 Oracles of good news
This section contains three vital prophecies: the promise of a new shepherd, the promise of the Spirit, and the vision of dry bones.
Ch 34 A new shepherd
What were the shepherds (leaders) of Israel criticised for? (v1-4)
What does the Lord promise in response? Who will shepherd the people? (e.g. 34:15, 23)
There is something of a puzzle here (at least for Ezekiel’s original audience. God promises a good shepherd for the people: but is this shepherd God himself, or a king in David’s line?
Notice the continued emphasis ‘and they shall know that I am the LORD their God with them’ (v30 and other places)
Ch 36:22-28 The promise of the Spirit
Read this passage slowly. What is the hope expressed here?
Bonus: Can you see any links with the new covenant promise in Jeremiah 31?
Ch 37 Valley of dry bones
This is a well-known passage. It symbolises the new life God will give his people, through his Spirit.
37v21-28 Key theological message of the book
- What is the hope?
- Bonus: What other scriptures are echoed here?
NOTE: Days 1-5 of each week contain the scripture reading for that week. Day 6 has just the 'key chapters'. If you want a briefer version of this plan that still takes you through the whole Bible, you could just read the key chapters featured on day 6. Day 7 has the podcast video where we discuss the week's reading.
About this Plan
The Bible OverBrew is a friendly virtual book group, helping you read the Bible in big chunks, preferably with a mug of tea! Maybe you've tried to read through the Bible before, but gave up when it felt confusing or too intense? We are here to help you! We provide notes and questions to guide your reading, and note ‘key chapters’ if you don’t have time to read it all. In our podcast at the end of each week we draw out the key themes, and how it all points to Christ. We’d love you to join us!
