Prayers From the Bible Part 2

DAY 6 OF 7

Paul's prayer for the Ephesian church

Read Ephesians 1:15–23

Here, Paul shares his prayer for the church of Ephesus. He starts by thanking God for their faith in Jesus and their love for God’s people, but then he petitions God on their behalf. It’s a powerful prayer that’s made beautiful by what Paul specifically prays for.

Paul doesn’t pray for riches, glory, or provision for the church. Instead, he prays for wisdom and revelation so that they would know God better. He prays for their eyes to be opened to the glorious hope that’s only found through Jesus. He prays they would know the incomparable power of God that raised Jesus from the grave. And he closes by reminding them that it’s God who sits above all things.

Like Paul, our deepest desire and our prayers for ourselves and others should first and foremost be to know God more. To have a deeper revelation of who He is, of His power, and of His love for us. Our daily prayer should be to have eyes fixed on Jesus and ears in tune with the Holy Spirit. Whilst God wants to hear our deepest desires and prayers, His desire is for our hearts. Our God is a loving Father who deserves our undivided worship, adoration and praise.

Paul’s prayer reminds us that God, in His loving kindness, wants an intimate relationship with us and that we should want the same. As we go about our days, let’s pray like Paul for a deeper revelation of God, His power, His love and His sovereignty.
