Prayers From the Bible Part 2

DAY 5 OF 7

Swapping mine for Yours, Father

In the quiet, shadowed Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus kneels in deep anguish. He knows what lays ahead – betrayal, mockery and the cross. What became of the Son of God’s courage and conviction? His life on earth was all about His death and resurrection, wasn’t it?

Jesus’ prayer reveals both His humanity and His divinity. Jesus was living out a divine duality. His living as a man enduring the brutality of those who were about His destruction, while also aware He was also teaching generations across the millennia to follow. He was both asking for Himself and prototyping what it means to give God’s will the right of way in our lives.

As we meditate on this scene, we’re invited to reflect on our own lives. How often do we cling to our desires and plans, fearing the unknown and the difficult?

Jesus’ prayer teaches us that true peace and purpose are found not in the avoidance of pain but in the submission to God’s will in it. In surrendering our fears and uncertainties, we discover the depth of God’s love and the richness of His plans for us.

We all have areas in our lives where it’s difficult to surrender to God. I know in my life, they are often the ones I leave last or even out of my prayers. It is not as if He does not know they exist right? The starting place may be repeating Jesus’ words – aloud. ‘Not my will, but yours be done.’

About this Plan

Prayers From the Bible Part 2

In the different seasons of life, we find ourselves praying for and needing very different things from God; and sometimes it can be hard to find the words. Follow along with this plan and read the words of people like David, Jonah and even Jesus Himself, as they ask for a variety of things and bring their situations before God. Maybe it will help you pray too!
