Be a Blessing, Reach the World for Christنموونە
The final purpose of the Great Commission
Today is the last day to reflect together on missions. Why did Jesus give this command to reach all nations? Are we doing this so that our church can grow a little bit? Do we do it because then we can say that our denomination also has churches in Africa or Asia? Do we do it because we feel guilty or want to be obedient to the Great Commission?
None of these! The purpose of mission is that we enlarge the choir of people who praise God, so that there will be people of every language who bring glory to God. The final purpose of the mission is not our church, our organization, our guilt or our obedience. The goal of the mission is worship. John Piper, an American theologian, says in one of his books that the mission exists only in places where there is no worship yet. The purpose of missions is worship. That is what we are aiming for.
The book of Revelation ends with a ‘picture’ of the final outcome of world history. We see a large group of people that no one can count, and all these people are worshiping God. They come from all tribes, languages and nations. They form a choir of people praising God. That is the purpose of missions. It begins and ends with God.
Are you also looking forward to joining in with this large crowd? How many people will you bring with you to this multitude of worshippers? Are you grateful for what God has done in your life? Are you looking forward to seeing your relatives, your neighbors, your colleagues or your friends come to faith and follow Jesus? That is the ultimate goal of missions: more and more people that worship God.
Let us pray today that God will use simple people like us to expand His kingdom. Also try to motivate others to do so by talking about it in your church, home group or youth club. Or forward this reading plan to help more people be aware of the importance of missions.
May God bless you!
