Your True Identity
“You are more than Jude 3 Project.”
My therapist’s words sunk into my heart. The Jude 3 Project was the nonprofit I had started with the mission of helping Christians know what they believe and why. I had been so immersed in my work that I had made it my identity.
My heart ached and the questions filled my head, How had I connected my identity, my value, to something so tangible, so breakable? What if Jude 3 fails? Who would I be then? How will I know my worth? Who was I without the Jude 3 Project? I needed to find out.
Can you relate? Do you feel the weight of an identity that is not your own? Have you given a counterfeit identity value over your true identity?
Friend, you are more than your relationships, more than your gender, more than your race. You are more than your career, more than your bank account, more than your sexual orientation, more than your mistakes and wins. When God wove you together in your mother’s womb, he made you his own. Just as he is too big to put in a box, so is your identity.
Scripture tells us plainly,
God created human beings in his own image.
In the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27)
Personhood is based on whose image is on you, not what you can achieve or what you do. My therapist reminded me of that when she told me I am not the same as my organization. She freed me from the pain of performing. I can simply exist being who God made me to be. The same is true of you.
Walk with your head held high, knowing your identity is secure in God.
God, when I’m tempted to put my identity in things that are too small, remind me that being made in your image is more than enough. I need your help with this. I can’t do it on my own.
