It's Going to Be Alright (The Art of Grieving): 6 Days Through the Book of Joel

DAY 1 OF 6

Grieving is an intricate process, one that you often wish you could master with experience. However, as I've learned through personal loss, each instance of grief is unique. Comparing your current sorrow to past grief doesn't necessarily help. It's a fresh journey every time.

In the Bible, the book of Joel provides some profound insights into dealing with loss and grief. While you might struggle to locate this small book nestled among the twelve minor prophets, its messages are mighty. Joel teaches us significant principles for navigating through the darkest seasons of life.

One key lesson from Joel is that grief isn't something to be rushed. There's no set timeline for mourning; it takes as long as it takes. Just as locusts devastated the land of Israel, leaving the people in utter desolation, your own losses can leave you feeling ravaged and empty. Yet, it's in this raw honesty that you can begin to heal.

Another principle Joel emphasizes is the importance of community. In Joel 1:2-3, the prophet urges the people to tell their children and grandchildren about the devastating events they've witnessed. Sharing your pain with others helps to lighten the load. You need your family and church community to support you, validate your experiences, and walk alongside you in your grief.

Joel also reminds us of God's Sovereignty and His responsiveness to repentance. While it might feel like the world is spinning out of control during your times of grief, God is still at the helm. In Joel 2:12-13, God calls us to return to Him with all our hearts, with fasting, weeping, and mourning. This act of turning back to God, of laying your sorrows at His Feet, brings about refreshment and a renewal in your spirit.

In our modern context, we often lack visible, communal expressions of grief. We don't wear mourning clothes as they did in the Victorian era to signal our sorrow, which can make it feel like we're grieving alone. However, it's vital to find ways to express and share your grief, whether through conversations, writing, or other forms of expression.

As you navigate through your grief, remember these key takeaways:

  • Take Your Time: Don't rush the process. Healing is a journey.
  • Lean on Community: Share your pain with those around you. Let them support and comfort you.
  • Return to God: Trust in His control and His Promise of comfort and renewal.

Above all, hold on to the Promise that God is with you through every step. His Presence offers the Ultimate Comfort and Hope, assuring you that, in Him, it's going to be all right.

Grieve honestly, grieve in community, and grieve with the assurance that God sees, knows, and heals.
