What Matters Most (The Book of 2 Timothy)

DAY 11 OF 20

REFLECT

Baby number 7. As each sibling took a turn in holding her, my words fell on repeat. “That’s right. We need to be gentle. She’s our gift from God. You’re a big brother/sister again!” Tiny fingers wrapped around slightly-larger fingers. Love that had been woven into our hearts overflowed into the room. Introducing our children to a new sibling has been one of the most precious moments in our lives. If you’re a sibling or a parent, I’m sure you agree. Yet this special moment soon after birth is overtaken with more reminders at home. “Be careful.” “Don’t squeeze her so hard.” “Hold the bottle up.” “Shhhh! It’s naptime.”

Paul’s letter continues to offer Timothy a few pointers and today’s verses are directed to caring for younger “sibling” Christians. Essentially, Paul is giving Timothy the same reminders parents offer their younger children when a new member joins the family. Be kind, don’t fight, teach him how to do it, and tell the truth. He also makes sure that Timothy is aware of the spiritual warfare happening between Satan and the Holy Spirit when Christians choose the wrong path.

As Christians, we must speak the truth in love. Sometimes it is our job to “hold the bottle up” for a younger Christian, helping them understand God’s truth; and sometimes it’s our job to simply hold their hand as the Spirit works in their heart. Only wisdom from God can guide us as to the best response in each situation.

PRAY

Heavenly Father, grant me wisdom and guidance through every minute today. Show me how to walk the balance of truth and grace. Amen.

What is one small way you could encourage a younger Christian today? Why do you think Paul emphasizes gentleness and kindness in this passage?
