The Brokenness of Idolatry
I don't believe I have ever heard anyone say, "Well, today I worshiped my idol again." Idolatry is a severe human problem. God used the very first of his Ten Commandments to forbid it. But the essence of idolatry is that people are absolutely convinced that they are trusting and confiding in something true and rock-solid. Idolatry is always blind.
Which means that you might be hip-deep in it right now. An idol is the controlling force, the decision-making factor in your life. Do you need your boyfriend more than God? Is your money more precious than your divine forgiveness? Is your life organized around acquiring and using drugs or alcohol?
Wrong: "I know this is bad for me, but I need it to survive." Wrong: "I know my parents would disapprove of how I'm living right now, but if I don't, I’ll lose my girlfriend." Right: "The LORD God is a sun and shield. . . . Blessed is the one who trusts in you" (Psalm 84:11,12).
Whatever is keeping you from giving your whole heart, mind, body, soul, and spirit to the Lord is an idol and must go. Today would be a good day to get rid of it!
