The Comfort of the Psalms in the Battles of Life

DAY 7 OF 7

Live in brotherly love

“Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron.” (Psalm 133:1-2)

“It is good and pleasant.” That is a beautiful combination. Because not everything that is good is pleasant and conversely. But dwelling in unity is both. It is good.

It aligns us with God’s intention and with God's law. It is also pleasant. You enjoy it. It makes you happy.

Dwelling in unity is compared to oil or dew that descends. That means it is a gift from above. So if you don’t have it, pray for it. And realize that the best unity is spiritual. Dwelling in unity is compared to the anointing of Aaron as a high priest. This is not coincidental. Unity rooted in a shared faith in the Lord is the strongest unity that exists.

Dwelling together in unity is also a qualification for serving God. It is like an anointing that you must receive before serving God, just like Aaron was anointed with special oil for his service as a priest. You cannot have conflicts with everyone and expect to serve God. You cannot remain in anger and be fruitful in God's service.

Dwelling in unity is not just necessary to serve God but even to receive His blessing.

When does the Lord give His blessing? When brothers dwell in unity. You cannot expect a blessing on your life if you are not willing to dwell in unity. To dwell in unity, you must be able to forgive, as Jesus has forgiven you. How is forgiveness progressing in your life?
