HOW MAMMON ATTACKS US

When Mammon attacks us, he hits below the belt. He is ruthless and tireless. I don’t mean to frighten you but to prepare you for the battles to come on your journey. Basically, Mammon attacks our emotions, our spiritual life, and our family. He will try to deceive us by manipulating our emotions. He will try to convince us that we are what we have, but as Pastor Carlito Paes says, "Self-worth and net worth are not the same thing."

Unfortunately, society teaches us that a person’s value is based on their financial power. Some people try to look wealthier than they are to be accepted, while others act unethically or even illegally to get more money. Our identity needs to be grounded in a higher place. Believe that your worth comes from what Jesus said about you on the cross, that you are worth dying for. Our identity must come from that. We are first and foremost children of God. That is the definition of a human being!

Mammon will also try to influence us spiritually. So many people are bound by Mammon because of spiritual bonds made knowingly and unknowingly. When Jesus entered Zacchaeus’ house, repentance welled up in Zacchaeus’ heart, and he promised to give half of his possessions to the poor and to give back fourfold to all the people he had extorted. When Jesus heard that, He declared that salvation had come to that house. In a way, the way Zacchaeus had handled money up until then had put him in a prison on the inside, a prison that could only be destroyed by repentance—the result of his encounter with Jesus.

Lastly, we see that Mammon attacks the family. Many couples live with the idea “‘til money do us part.” The love of money has brought so much heartache into so many homes! May you always be alert, dedicating your emotions, your spiritual life, and your family to Jesus.

Remember: Mammon attacks us in foundational areas because he wants to be the main influence in our lives. Be on guard!
