Thirsty

DAY 3 OF 3

Jesus reminds us that although our flesh is weak, our spirit desires and thirsts for God. But to drink, one must take an active part and drink the water. The one who must go to the source is you. Jesus is already there, waiting for you, desiring to give you the water of eternal life that quenches your thirst forever.

God's Word reveals to us what He wants to tell us, but prayer is a two-way street. You talk to God, and He responds—sometimes with words, sometimes with actions, but He always responds. Among many other things, Jesus taught His disciples to persevere in prayer. Perhaps they did not need it when they were with Him—they could speak to him directly—but they would need it when He ascended to heaven. And indeed, they did. The Holy Spirit descended upon them, and since then, all believers of all ages know that we have the channel of prayer to go to the Source and quench our thirst.

However, prayer is something we must exercise because our flesh is weak, and the muscle of prayer must be stronger. That is why Jesus invites us to ask; this puts us in a position of involvement. He tells us to seek, which makes us always active; we are responsible for keeping prayer alive. And He reminds us that when we knock, He is at the door to open it.
