When we’re wondering what to do, the best one to ask for advice is the One who created us. He’s really familiar with our abilities. Be honest with God and ask Him what He has in mind for you. Ask Him to help you identify the unique skills and talents you can use to help others. Ask anything. Prayer is private, and it’s impossible to embarrass ourselves with God. Be honest about what you love to do the most, even if it seems insignificant. Trust Him to give you a lightbulb moment.
What came to mind for me was using grocery coupons, even though coupons weren’t exactly rocket science. In fact, in the year 2000, couponing was a very unpopular activity, and coupon redemptions were extremely low. Even so, using coupons turned out to be the skill God used on my path, even if the world didn’t understand it yet. So don’t underestimate your skills or abilities, because God can work with anything. When we align our specific skills with our genuine desire to make a difference in the world, we’ll be on our way to discovering our bold vision. Pray about it every day and see what happens.
What is it that you really love to do? Don’t limit yourself based on what you think others would consider worthy of changing the world. God’s economy doesn’t always seem logical, so you don’t have to start with a logical idea. Just start with what you love and go from there. Make a list of all kinds of things you enjoy doing. You can help people doing just about anything if it’s something you love to do.
You may know what your abilities are, but perhaps you don’t know exactly what your passion is. You’d like to help others, but you’re not even sure who you could help. You know there are plenty of people in need of food, shelter, friendship, encouragement, love—the list goes on. Maybe you’re just not sure where to start looking, and you’re not sure what worthy cause really sparks your passion.
Prayer
Father, thank You for giving me a heart for helping others. Please guide me as I seek to glorify You. Amen.
