As we seek to follow God, it can be easy to say that we want to walk in the will of God, but not know how or what that looks like. It can feel like going on a journey and not having a map. In these moments, it is easy to just start thinking or behaving the way that we think is right based on our knowledge. But how often does that end well?
In this passage, Paul writes to the Ephesians about the importance of understanding God’s will and way. He doesn’t leave them (or us) to our own devices, but he reminds us that God has given us a guide, like a map, in the Holy Spirit. What is amazing about the Holy Spirit is that if we allow Him to, He will fill us up and work through us to make the world around us look a little more like Heaven. The Holy Spirit is always drawing us into more of God and His will, leading us in the journey we call life.
Paul gives us a few practical steps to take as followers of Jesus:
- Encourage someone - God’s will for everyone's life is to know how loved they are by Him and that He has a plan for their life. Encourage someone with a verse or worship song today. It will make their life so much better.
- Sing - When we worship God by singing it is a quick way to align our mind and body with God. Your body is making a sound that, whether you have a good voice or not, is pleasing to God. As you worship, the Holy Spirit will fill you up with the reminder of how good God is, and of His plans for your life.
- Practice Gratitude - Practicing gratitude is reminding yourself just how good God has been to you, and it turns your heart more towards Him.
- Serve others - By serving others, we embody Jesus’ kingdom work continuing here on Earth. As we serve others, our hearts begin to open to the Holy Spirit who shows us that those we serve are children of God, just like us, no matter their place in the world.
Prayer Points
- Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you up so that you may understand God’s will for your life day by day.
- After this, take 5 minutes to listen and write down anything you feel the Holy Spirit might be saying for you to do today from the list above.
