The Forgotten Mother - Hagar
Yesterday we unpacked how God delivered on his promise of a son for Abraham and Sarah in their old age. From the outside, it looks like a beautiful, happy ending. But not everyone involved was excited about the outcome. When Sarah and Abraham were waiting, still unable to have a child, Sarah tried to take matters into her own hands. She told Abraham to have a child with their servant Hagar so that he would have a biological heir.
Abraham got Hagar pregnant, and she had a son named Ishmael. But as soon as Sarah had a child of her own, she wanted Hagar and Ishmael out of the picture. So that’s what happened—Hagar and her child were sent away into the wilderness. Hagar had no say in any of this. She was taken advantage of, mistreated, and forced to fend for herself when everything was said and done. Yet in her darkest moment, God came to her rescue. He provided for her and was with Ishmael as he grew up. Sometimes, our circumstances ruin our life.
It feels completely unfair when knocked down by things out of our control. And yet, in those moments, God is still with us. He is still good, and he can redeem any situation. No matter your circumstances, God still cares about you and wants you to depend on him. God came to Hagar’s rescue, and she relied on his strength and goodness to save her.
What situation are you in right now that feels out of control? What circumstance do you need God to redeem? Call upon his name today.
