Finding the Light in Suicide

DAY 4 OF 7

DAY 4

GOD’S WHISPER

Again, I want to welcome you back this week. I am proud of you for overcoming some challenges and being here with me today.

This week we have learned about Elijah. He won a battle against Baal prophets and then ran for his life. While he was running, fear overcame him through the darkness, and Elijah withdrew and pleaded with God for death. When God responded, He provided Elijah with strength.

Today we will find out how God speaks in 1 Kings 19:9-13:

9 And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 10 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” 11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

I’m not sure if you noticed, but God whispers?! Here, Elijah answered God’s question of what in the world you are doing and said in not so many words, “God, they are going to kill me!” It is here God asked Elijah to go out of his cave.

This was a cave that was protecting Elijah right now, and God had strengthened him and asked him to be vulnerable and go out.

I’m sure at this point, Elijah thought what may happen next would be something GREAT, but instead, he gets a whisper. You must see God did not come in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but God came in the whisper!

Elijah went out, covered his face, and became vulnerable before God.

I want to leave you with this today: just like in Elijah’s story, in your darkest moments, God is there. He gives you strength, even if it is hard to find or he has to come back a second time. Although we expect him to interrupt all our pain in a dramatic way, he came as just a whisper to Elijah. Perhaps God is whispering to you today, also.

I pray you can find that whisper today and stand vulnerable with the Lord. I’ll see you back here tomorrow as we listen to that whisper.
