Daily Prayers for Grieving Hearts: A 21-Day Plan for Comfort on the Road to Recovery

DAY 6 OF 21

LEAN BACK AGAINST JESUS

[John] leaned back against Jesus . . . JOHN 13:25

John, Jesus’ disciple and friend, was reclined next to Jesus after eating a meal, then he leaned back against Jesus. This is an act that takes complete trust and assurance that it’s okay to touch, let alone touch the Savior of the world. It speaks volumes about the closeness of their relationship because John felt safe within the realm of their friendship and at peace because he knew Jesus would keep him from falling. John loved and trusted Him within a deep and abiding connection. Jesus obviously felt the same. It is the same for us when we recline our hearts and spend time in His presence. He is there when we can stand, but He is also there to catch us when we aren’t able to uphold ourselves from the burden of our grief. He is able and willing to take on the weight that a downcast spirit brings and listen to our cries for as long as we need. What a friend we have in Jesus.

Lord Jesus, I love You and trust You. I want to lean against You now and tell You all about the way I’m feeling today. I didn’t know life could be so hard, but I know You understand. You are my Savior and friend, who holds me up so I can endure and persevere in ways I never thought I could. Thank You for Your presence; thank You for remaining my help and support through each and every moment of this season. Your grace and love are sufficient for me, and I am grateful.

IN YOUR GREAT NAME, I PRAY. AMEN.

About this Plan

Daily Prayers for Grieving Hearts: A 21-Day Plan for Comfort on the Road to Recovery

Grief has many phases, and some phases make it difficult for us to find the words or motivation to pray. In the moments when we need God the most but can’t seem to connect with Him, this 21-day reading plan can give us language to bridge the gap. It helps you remember that God is close to the brokenhearted, deeply attentive to your pain, and capable of healing and restoring all of us. Each day, read a short message about a promise from God, find a corresponding Scripture, and let the daily prayer guide your time with the Lord.
