Advent - the Gift Devotional

DAY 22 OF 25

&Idquo;God's hand picked audience”

The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them. (Luke 2:20)

In 1966, the new Metropolitan Opera House was opened in New York. It was one of the social events of the 20th Century.

But imagine if the Board of the Metropolitan Opera House had said, “For our first performance with the greatest orchestra ever assembled… with the greatest musicians ever brought on stage… we’re going to invite all the trash collectors of New York to be in the audience. Let’s take all of those who pick up our trash every day, and let them fill the Metropolitan Opera House for this inaugural performance!”

This is what God did on that first Christmas. He displayed and announced the coming of His Son to shepherds – the lowest of the economic social strata of that day.

Shepherds weren’t able to go in the temple because they were never ceremonially clean. Therefore, they were not considered “worthy” people in that day. Shepherds had no status, yet God had the heavenly hosts sing to them and announce the coming of His Son!

This is the humility of God. And what do you do with a God who is humbler than you are? You worship Him!
