DAY 8 OF 30

The Shunammite Woman

One of the greatest stories about the ministry of Elisha is his interaction with the Shunammite woman. Scripture does not mention this woman's name, but we know that she was married, wealthy, and hospitable. She was also content with her life, even though there were places of significant lack. Though she was wealthy and well-contented, she did not have a child. In those days, a child was a status symbol, a sign of favor, and a guarantee that the family line would continue. Her husband was old, and the possibility of having a child did not even seem to be a thought in her mind.

This story indicates that Elisha was a frequent guest at the home of the Shunammite woman and eventually wanted to bless her in return for her hospitality. Elisha's servant pointed out the lack of an heir, and without asking if she wanted one, Elisha declared she would have a son.

In that culture, such a promise would have felt like a tease, but the Shunammite woman was a woman of great faith. Elisha's word proved true, and she had a son. Sometime later, when her son died, the woman did not dive deep into grief but went to the man of God. She knew how to get to God, so she found Elisha. Her statements were full of faith. She did not give weight to her doubts but declared that all would be well. Her son was raised from the dead, and this miracle was a foretaste of the power Jesus would show as he raised people from the dead during his ministry. This is one of the most poignant stories that shows Elisha doing ministry much like Jesus.

The faith and trust the Shunammite exhibited were inspirational, to say the least. She did not waver in knowing who she was, who God was, and believing God was for her. Instead of lamenting or seeking help elsewhere, she went straight to the source and got the help she needed!

Question: What is God doing in your life that requires unwavering faith? Do you doubt that God is on your side when life seems impossible?

Prayer: Ask God to remind you who you are. Ask Him to remind you who He is in your current situation. Then, ask God to give you the faith to believe He is on your side!
