A Confident Mom

DAY 1 OF 7

You + God = Enough

As a mom, do you find that sometimes discouragement or shame seems to come in for the kill?

One thing I’ve learned is I have an enemy hell-bent on making me believe when my best isn’t good enough, I’m not good enough. But God’s Word has taught me how to be aware of the devil’s schemes and ready to stand against them. In his first letter, Peter tells us how:

Keep your mind clear, and be alert. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion as he looks for someone to devour. Be firm in the faith and resist him. (1 Peter 5:8–9)

On one of my most discouraging days, I knew I needed to get my mind clear. I asked the Holy Spirit to help me declutter my thoughts with the clarity of His truths.

First, I made a list of logistical truths that included facts about what happened in the past few days: what I did right, wrong, and forgot to do.

Then, I made a list of spiritual truths about who God is and what He thinks of me. Going through my Bible, I found and wrote promises in my journal (such as Psalm 73:26 and Psalm 138:8).

I also made a list of circumstantial truths about my reality at that time, such as our boys changing schools, my father having emergency heart surgery, and our adoption of a baby from Ethiopia—all within six months.

I realized my unrealistic expectations had blinded me from seeing I needed to let others know I couldn’t balance it all. I had to accept that although I was doing the best I could, it wasn’t always enough, but it didn’t mean I wasn’t enough.

You are not your failures. Sometimes circumstances don’t give you sufficient margin to do your best. Take time to look at the truth of who you are, who God is, and what your life is like right now so you can make the adjustments you need. Remind yourself of God’s promises—promises that never change.

Jesus, help me remember I am not defined by what I do, good or bad. I am a child of God, holy and dearly loved by You, and that is the only label that belongs on me! Amen.
