Swords Up: How to Use the Weapon of God’s Word

DAY 4 OF 7

Principle #3: I actively study the Word of God.

In school, teachers loved giving pop quizzes. There’s nothing more gut-wrenching than being caught unprepared for a test. The reality is studying prepared us for more than just the test. It was for the moment in life when we needed to apply the lessons we’d learned. Studying God’s Word is meant to prepare us in the same way.

Tests of faith are good just like those pop quizzes in school were good. They make sure we’re ready for the real thing. When our character is sharpened by the Word of God in moments of testing, we’re better prepared for the moments of real battle against temptation, pride, unforgiveness, or fear.

So, in my life, I connect with a seasonal bible study group where group members individually study the same passage throughout the week, then we gather to discuss what we learned. In the off-seasons, I use study methods like S.O.A.P. as I read through my one-year bible plan.

Action Steps:

Try the S.O.A.P method to study God’s Word today. Use your notebook or app.

  • Scripture: Highlight the verse(s) from your bible reading that stands out.
  • Observation: Make note of what’s happening. Who’s speaking? Who’s the audience? What else do you notice?
  • Application: Where do you fit in the picture? Identify how the verse(s) can be actively applied to your life today.
  • Prayer: Pray about what you studied. Ask Holy Spirit to help you apply His Word to your life throughout the day.
