The Heart
By Bryan Craig
SCRIPTURES:
“As water reflects the face, so a man’s heart reflects the man.” Proverbs 27:19 NIV
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21 NIV
“The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart the mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45 NIV
THOUGHT:
God has built a heart barometer of sorts in our lives. We are a living testimony to our faith, to the One we serve. Every day, we display our hearts for the world to see. They see our hearts by the things we treasure. They see our hearts in the good or evil that we do to others. They see our hearts by the words that come out of our mouths. Scripture tells us to test the spirits (1 John 4:1), and to test God’s will (Romans 12:2), and these verses imply that we can also test our hearts to see if they are reflecting Christ.
APPLICATION:
Test your heart by examining what is flowing from it. Think about how you live every day and consider that your actions reflect your heart. How does that make you feel? Write your thoughts in your journal. Write down a list of the things you treasure. Consider if re-prioritization is needed. Where do you see God bringing good out of your heart? Where do you see evil spewing out of your heart? Write down your thoughts in your journal.
RESPONSE:
Write a prayer to the Lord about your discoveries. It may be a painful prayer of repentance or it may be a prayer of worship and thanksgiving. Be assured of this- God knows what’s going on in your heart, and He cares about you.
Tell someone else you trust what God showed you.
About this Plan
When you think of the human heart, what comes to mind? Love? Emotion? Courage? Pain? Our hearts matter to God and the more we understand our hearts, the more we will understand God’s will for our lives. For the next five days let's look at some scriptures and listen to what God says about our hearts.
