A battle between light and darkness
Genesis 1 records how God created everything “very good”. However, it did not take long before evil entered creation through an attack of the domain of spiritual darkness. God’s enemy, Satan, convinced the first humans to disobey their Creator. This disobedience is called “the fall of man”, and it caused pain and death that lasted till this very day.
Since this first attack of Satan, he constantly tries to destroy God’s good creation and God’s salvation plan. The earth has become a battle ground. If we look around us or read the newspapers, Satan seems to be pretty successful! The earth is filled with unrighteousness, sorrow, and sin.
And yet, the Bible says: “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”. Yes, Satan is powerful. But no, he won’t win the battle! In fact, he has already been defeated. He knows that “his time is short” (Revelation 12:12), then God will destroy him. The light can never be overcome by the darkness, because it originates in the eternal, almighty God.
In what ways do you notice that this world is a battle ground?

About this Plan
Immediately in the first chapter of the Bible, we read how God created light. And further on in the Bible, light is often used as a metaphor for God’s domain as opposed to the domain of sin and death. Jesus even calls Himself “the Light of the world”. Light and darkness thus have an important place in the Bible. This reading plan presents a selection of verses about this topic.
