Dirty Water
For His very first public miracle, Jesus chose to make wine in a heavily used jar of washing water. These stone jars were probably covered with germs and dirt because each person who came to the wedding that day had to ceremonially wash their hands from them. This is before anti-bacterial soap was invented, mind you.
Jesus gave the people at the wedding something unimaginable that day. He turned their temporary washing water into a symbol of His permanently cleansing blood. He turned a vessel of cleaning water, which they would never drink, into a jar of wine described as more delicious than the fancy stuff they drank earlier!
We are God’s unlikely vessels. We are ordinary people, filled with ordinary attempts to make ourselves clean or good. But when we’re made new by the healing power of the blood of Jesus, we become extraordinary! We’re filled and transformed by the same power that can turn washing water into delectable wine.
