Walking Everyday with the Holy Spirit
Often, we can walk our Christian journey believing the Holy Spirit only makes an appearance in our lives when we really need Him. The Bible actually tells us a different truth. The reality is the Holy Spirit knows us intimately and is with us always. The book of Romans teaches us that it’s our responsibility to choose to live our lives setting our mind on the Spirit.
In Galatians, Paul uses language that promotes the idea that we are to live every moment of our lives in intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit, following his leading and walking in step with Him.
To “walk in the Spirit” simply means to live in moment-by-moment reliance upon the inner guidance of the Holy Spirit. This Greek word for “walk” literally means “to walk in line with”. It is an encouragement to live in submission of heart to the Holy Spirit.
We see this all through the book of Acts. The early Church was led by the Spirit in everything it did! The Spirit spoke to them and directed them in their every waking hour. No decision was made without consulting Him. The Church’s motto was: “He who has ears to hear, let him hear what the Spirit has to say.”
Further, as we walk by the Spirit and walk in step with the Spirit, we will bear fruit in our lives that testifies to our faith in Christ. Believers who actively follow the leading of the Holy Spirit will manifest the fruit of the Spirit.
As Romans 6 teaches us, Spirit-filled fruitfulness is available for every believer who actively surrenders to the leading of the Holy Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit gives evidence to the reality and character of Christ within believers.
We all want to be Christians who bear the fruit of the Spirit. The key to this is not striving in our own strength to be more patient or kind, but to surrender to the Holy Spirit and remind ourselves daily to set our minds on Him.
As we come to the end of this devotional, why not make a fresh commitment to this lifestyle of being Spirit-led everyday. As you do, you will experience a freshness and vitality to your Christian faith, living in intimate relationship with the one who is always with you and at work in you, the Holy Spirit.
