Discernment
Discernment is one thing we all should know about. A heart for the Lord is necessary, but discernment leads to the discovery of God’s will. It leads you to know what is good and pleasing to God.
Discernment is the ability to judge well. As parents, if all you do is decide for your children and say no to everything, there will be a moment when they are going to have to make their own decisions. Teach them to discern between what is good and bad, or evil and right. Do not be too strict, to where they do not even understand because every decision is made by you.
There are three things that we should learn to discern well. They are in the areas of morals, missions, and marriage. In morals, discernment applies to thinking differently than this world. The world is asking you to walk in sin. Change your thoughts about sin. Dive into the Scriptures to know what sin is and how it displeases God. Renew your mind and place your thoughts on God’s truth. You are either going to allow sin to affect the way you think or have God’s truth affect your thoughts and decisions. Ask yourself this question: How does this story end? Vaping, drinking alcohol, drugs, sex – how do these end? You cannot plant bad seeds and hope for good crops. Discern your morals.
Secondly, discern your mission. I am not referring to mission trips, like sharing the Gospel in Asia. I am referring to your purpose in life. You are not going to be good at everything. Nobody is. When you find what you are good at and what God wants you to do, lean into it and go for it. Stay in your lane and allow God to use you with the gifts He gave you. Change the world and please God with the mission He created you for.
Lastly, discern your marriage. Most of your happiness or angst in life will come from who you marry. They can be cute and not be fun to be married to. Find somebody who is walking with God and get wise counsel from those around you. You want a marriage where you pray with your spouse, not one where you are always praying for your spouse. Marriage is hard for every couple at different times. Use discernment in marriage. Be pure and walk with God. Wait on the right one. Pray for your spouse already, even if you have yet to meet her/him.
