Find Freedom From the Draw of Food: Renew Your Mind for Lasting Change

DAY 1 OF 7

Search My Heart

When God sent Samuel out to anoint the future king of Israel, Samuel’s first instinct was to go for the most obvious choice based on physical standards. He had all seven of Jesse’s other sons pass before him before he asked, “Are these all the sons you have?” It wasn’t until this point that he found out there was one more out there tending the sheep.

All too often, we regard our weight and appearance as measures of our worth and value. But, in reality, our weight is only a symptom of what’s going on inside. On the other hand, God goes straight to the heart, rather than focusing on our outer appearance. The Bible consistently speaks of the heart as the storehouse of our beliefs, motivations and assumptions. So, it’s ultimately our heart that fuels our behavior with food.

God doesn’t care about your weight, but He does care when you allow things to come before your relationship with him; whether it be stress, discontentment, misplaced priorities or food. God’s word assures that you can do better, you can have better and you can be better as you allow Him to speak truth into your life. The problem is that we actually believe our excuses.

If you tell yourself something enough times, you will eventually believe it.  When it comes to weight, your behavior follows your beliefs. If you believe that you have no control over your choices, then you will consistently fail to take any control when tempted by food.

Ask God to search your heart. What have you been telling yourself about your weight or appearance? What lies have you believed or what comparisons have you made? Are you ready to accept what God has to say about you as His child?
