The Heart of God

DAY 3 OF 7

 Christmas Angels

Christmas decorations show angels as sweet, cherub-like little babies. “How cute!” However, Cherubim are indescribably majestic beings the Bible repeatedly reveals that our Lord sits between on His throne. They are distinct from angels, though often confused with them. On the other hand, angels are described in various ways — at the tomb of Christ as two men in white (Acts 1:10), but on other occasions as awesome beings. For example, John the Apostle was so impressed with an angel that he wanted to worship him (Revelation 19:10, (NASB)).

The Bible reveals that those who saw angels were often frightened, such as the shepherds in Bethlehem (Luke 2:9). Daniel gives us a full description in Daniel 10:5-6. He was overcome and was sick for three days. “Behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz: His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in color to polished brass, and the voice of his words, like the voice of a multitude” (KJV). I’d be frightened too!

But it doesn’t stop there. 2 Kings 19: 35-36 and 2 Chronicles 32:20-21 describe the same event in different ways… A single angel cutting down nearly two-hundred-thousand Assyrian mighty men of valor who were bent on destroying God’s people. And he did it in just one night. Similarly, as we read in Revelation 20:1-3, “Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while” (NKJV). That is the power of an angel.
