DAY 31 OF 365

Resisting the Holy Spirit

Acts 7:51, 53
“You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit!...you who have received the law that was put into effect through angels but have not obeyed it.”

Why is rebellion among God’s people so prevalent and subtle?

We have a tendency to rely on our past rather than on what the Spirit is saying and doing today. We too have a distinguished history of God’s revelation to us and a theological tradition. The danger is that we rely on that tradition rather than on God’s Spirit and obedience to his revelation today. Rebellion comes from uncircumcised hearts and ears. We have not yet surrendered to God in the place of our will and our relationship with the Holy Spirit, so we refuse to listen to the promptings of the Spirit and we resist his conviction. Our religious devotion is an eternal ritual that has not yet transformed our mind or heart.

Lord Jesus, I repent for resisting your Spirit and today I surrender my will to you once again. I choose to obey the promptings and conviction of your Spirit, for your gory.
