DAY 78 OF 86

2SAMUEL 3-4:
In yesterday's story in 2nd Samuel, David was anointed as king over his own tribe of Judah, while all the rest of Israel followed Saul's son, Ishbosheth. Ishbosheth was not a strong leader, but was put in place by Abner, the general. Joab was David's military commander. In the first battle, it is significant that Abner killed Joab's brother Asahel. David's troops decisively won their first battle in the civil war.

PSALM 108:
Today’s psalm, chapter 108, is a poem of exalted praise, and a song asking God for military victory.

ROMANS 12a:
Yesterday at the end of Romans 11, we came to the end of Paul’s long parenthesis. God is seen as both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who refuse to believe. Belief is not something that just happens without our control. It is an act of the will to believe. That is why the stubborn disbelief of the Israelites is called 'disobedience'.

This chapter marks the beginning of the practical section of Romans. In other words, this part shows the way we should live based on the teachings given in the chapters before. Verses 1-2 are must-memorize verses!

Let’s pray.
Oh Lord, our God, we join Paul in praising You for your wisdom and knowledge. You have made all people prisoners to our own disobedience. This was not because You desired us to be disobedient, but because You wanted each person to humbly come— not in pride about our achievements, but in our complete spiritual poverty to accept the gift of salvation that glorifies your Son. We praise you also for Paul’s words in verse 29, that You, our God, do not change your mind about whom you choose and bless. You have chosen us, called us with the wonderful word ‘whoever’, You have justified us, and given us assurance through the gift of the Holy Spirit. Now we thank You for the assurance that You will not change your mind. So today we take hold of that assurance, and we promise to You also that we also will not change our minds about following Jesus. And we ask You to help us bring glory to Him.
