Unplugged

DAY 7 OF 15

Digital fast: Day 2. How did yesterday go for you? Whether you succeeded or failed, be resolved to “hit it hard” again today. Maybe add some additional fasting time or pick a new thing to add to your fast. If you struggled to maintain the fast yesterday, start over again today. Jesus is the King of do-overs! Consider what caused you to struggle and adjust!  Take a new approach today.

In Luke 4, we know that Jesus was tempted with hunger during his fast – he was hungry and Satan wanted Jesus to use his ability to do miracles for selfish reasons. Continuing in Luke, Jesus is tempted in a different way. Satan tempts Jesus with power. He shows Jesus “all the kingdoms of the world” and promises to give Jesus all of it if He will bow down to Him. Jesus (spoiler alert) refuses.

Don’t we face the same kinds of temptation Jesus did in these verses? I mean, think about it…we may not want to be kings ruling over kingdoms, but don’t we sometimes want to “have it all”? We want people to like the things we post, check our stories, respond to our messages, praise us for our strengths, and overlook our weaknesses. All of those things, in a way, are a hunger for power.  A hunger for influence.

Wanting more makes it mission-critical to detach ourselves from those things for a time. It helps us maintain balance and perspective. What God thinks of us and the plans He has for our lives are paramount over our influence and popularity. Take time today to consider how technology can influence your view of your own reputation. Pray that God would help you measure yourself by His view of you rather than how others view you!
