After a full day of teaching, Jesus and His disciples were on a boat crossing the Sea of Galilee. Without warning a huge storm erupts causing waves to pour into the boat. With the storm surging all around, the disciples (who are scared out of their minds) start freaking out about what to do.  

In the midst of all that, they look at Jesus and there he is – asleep. You might know how this story ends! Jesus gets awakened by His panicked friends and then resolves the situation in the most cool-headed, calm, confident way possible…He simply tells the storm to quiet down. And the storm obeys!

Here’s the thing we usually miss: When Jesus declared peace and quiet, He wasn’t declaring it over the storm; He was declaring it on a larger scale. He was saying, in effect, “Peace and quiet will reign – everywhere, at all times.”  At that moment, He calmed a storm, but He also calmed the guys with Him. Jesus’ peace extends to us today too!  He has the power to calm every situation in our lives with a single word.

Think about that: Peace is ours for the taking! It may feel like Jesus is sleeping when everything around us is raging! But we just need to wake Him up! We miss peace because we get caught up and distracted by the storm and forget to ask the storm-commander to handle it. What’s stressing you out today? What’s keeping you from finding peace? Ask God to calm that storm in your life in a way that only He can!
