How To Grow Up

DAY 1 OF 7

Age is just a number.

Has anyone ever told you to grow up? If you have older siblings, you’ve probably heard it more than once. But even though you can’t magically speed up time, you can learn how to make a difference no matter how old you are. How? Through a little thing called maturity.

Let’s start with the basics. First, what does it mean to be mature? To be mature means “to become fully developed.” And that’s why maturity is so important.

If we never grew up and matured, we’d be stuck. We’d never learn or become a better version of ourselves. We’d still be babies—and how awkward would that be? Seriously. Think back to some of your old baby pictures. You wore onesies, lived in diapers, and couldn’t feed yourself. Think how weird it would be if you were still doing those things. That’s where maturity comes in.

Maturity matters because if you want to be who God made you to be, you can’t stay stuck in who you used to be. But hold up. You also don’t want to grow up too fast because every stage in your story is a special opportunity for God to use you.

Think about it. At one point in time, you needed someone to feed you. Just like how it’s weird to imagine an adult drinking from a baby bottle, it’s equally weird to envision a tiny baby eating a McDonald’s hamburger. So, maturity looks different at every age, but the important thing is that we keep maturing.

One way we can start maturing is by being an example for others. And you can do that no matter how old you are! In fact, 1 Timothy 4:12 says you aren’t supposed to let anyone think less of you because you’re young. That includes you! Instead, the verse says to set an example for all believers in the way you live, love, speak, and in your purity. Basically, in the kingdom of God, age is just a number. You’re never too young to make a difference and to be an example of what Jesus looks like.

So over the next few days, we’re going to take a look at what it looks like to grow up. Why? Because we want to learn who God is calling us to be and to be an example of what it looks like to follow Jesus no matter what.

Watch today’s video and think about how you’ve grown up over the years. Consider areas of your life you need to mature in. And think about how you can start being an example right where you are—not waiting for someday but living it out today.
