Getting Lost in Jerusalem:
Have you ever been lost before? What did it feel like? I once got lost in the woods. We wandered around looking for a trail marker, a sign, anything that would show us the way. We felt helpless and not-in-control. When we did finally find our way out, a sense of relief and thanksgiving ran over us. Maybe you’re a parent who has lost their child for a short period of time. It’s a terrifying experience.
When Jesus went with His parents to Jerusalem at 12 years old, this would have been a big place for a young boy. Millions of people would have gathered in the city for the Passover feast. When Mary and Joseph traveled home they realized their son was not with them, they felt helpless. This was the child that God had entrusted them with and now He was missing! You would expect Jesus would have felt much the same way being lost in an unfamiliar city. However He was quite at home. Where did they find their beloved son? The temple of course. He was teaching the religious leaders and they were amazed.
When they found Jesus, Mary and Joseph were relieved and probably a little frustrated. Jesus’ response… Why were you worried? Didn’t you know I’d be here, in my Father’s house?
Jesus knew He had work to do. He wasn’t lost at all… He was right where He needed to be.
Are you lost in this world? Do you know where God wants you?
