Somehow in Christian culture, giving has been tied with guilt. When the offering plate comes around at church, a lot of us have mixed emotions. Some of us feel badly when we’re not giving. Others feel shame or even reluctance because they’ve got an inaccurate view of their stuff. In Scripture, God tells us this: I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens, for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:9-10).

What that means is that everything is God’s. God is not dependent on your giving to do what He’s going to do. He does not need your things. He could multiply bread if that’s what’s needed. He’s done that (Mark 6:30-44). He can provide money when it’s needed. He’s done that too (Matthew 17:24-27). God doesn’t need our money or our stuff. So when the guilt sinks in, reframe your thinking with the truth. God’s not asking because He needs something. He’s asking because He wants you to participate in something He’s up to. He’s asking because He wants your heart. So never turn away from a generous impulse. God is speaking. Give because it’s part of the adventure God wants to go on with you.
