My Father’s Child
I’m sure we’ve all read the scripture about the prodigal son. What a powerful picture it paints of the repentant heart of a son and the relentless love of Father God.
I am staggered at how many are unable to relate to our perfect Father. It evokes pain for some to consider God to be a loving Daddy. Why is it so difficult to receive love from Him? Perhaps it’s due to the lens through which we view Him. If our earthly dad was unpredictable, then perhaps God is too? Some may feel that He is waiting with a big stick to hit them each time a mistake is made.
Nothing could be farther from the truth. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only son!” (John 3:16). You are loved!
Think of the prodigal son. Through immaturity he literally lost relationship with his dad and his portion of the wealth accumulated through the work of his father over the years. Not only was his loss of finance great, but his living conditions had deteriorated so badly he was working with pigs. If you know anything about Jewish culture, you will understand that pigs aren’t highly esteemed creatures!
We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. In this story, the son realizes that his dad treats his own servants better that he is currently being treated and decided he’s ready to go home back to his father's house.
I want to make a statement here. There is no part of our hearts that the Father doesn’t see, so we can remove the variable of an unknown reaction. In our worst state he saw us worth the blood of Jesus. The purpose of the story of the prodigal son was to demonstrate the Heavenly Father’s response to us as sons and daughters. Nothing you’ve done could ever keep Him from restoring you, putting a robe on your shoulders and a ring on your finger. The lyrics of Father’s Child say, “Every mistake will vanish in waves of His powerful grace. Freedom at last, released from the past.”
I pray a Holy undoing takes place as you receive the love and forgiveness that can only come from Daddy God. He loves you. He dreamed you into existence. There is no safer place than in His arms. Today, as you sing this song, let there be reconciliation between you and the Father. I believe He is going to run towards you and embrace you like you’ve never experienced.
