Brokenness, the Path to GloryMostra
The Brokenhearted
Before we explore God-designed brokenness, we want to discover how God views the brokenhearted. So many circumstances can lead to broken-heartedness; a death in the family or of a close friend, broken relationships, divorce, bankruptcy, and many other tragedies almost always related to unwanted circumstances. The good news is that God will work for good in all our circumstances if we love Him and allow Him to work in our lives.
God describes Himself in Exodus 34:6 as “...the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness...” And Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”How does that make you feel? Isn’t it comforting to know that God is on your side, and near to you when you are brokenhearted?!
God isn’t just near to you when you are brokenhearted, but Psalm 147:3 tells us that He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. In Luke 4:18, Jesus even quoted from Isaiah 61:1 as His mission, “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.”
Isaiah 30:18 tells us that the Lord longs to be gracious to us, and He will rise up to show us compassion, and how blessed we are when we wait for Him! Therefore, King David could feel free to cry out to God in Psalm 51:1, “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion”.
Second Corinthians 1:3 describes God the Father as “..the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort”, and Jesus is one with the Father (Matthew 9:36) “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”
We all experience grief, but it is such a joy to know that our loving God watches over us, cares, and is always with us to heal and restore.
