Emmanuel
"The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us."
- John 1:14
“Do everything as if He were dwelling in us. Thus we shall be His temples and He will be within us as our God - as He actually is.”
- Ignatius of Antioch
When Jesus came onto the scene as the Son of God, it was baffling. God literally became a human, and pitched a tent — or made His dwelling — among people. Until this point, God's presence dwelled only within a literal tent, the tabernacle (Exodus 40:34-35). Then, the people built a temple where they could worship God, and God's presence dwelled there. But when Jesus came, God's presence took on an entirely new meaning. Instead of in a tabernacle or a temple, God's Spirit was in a human being.
And if that wasn't mind-boggling enough, Jesus gave His followers the very Spirit of God that resided inside Him (John 2:22)! So where God's Spirit once dwelled in a tabernacle, then a temple, then Jesus... His Spirit now dwells in us.
Emmanuel literally translates to "God With Us". Jesus is God with skin on, pitching His tent to be with His people. And His Holy Spirit has now "pitched His tent" within our very beings. Jesus — no matter where we might go — is as close to us as the air we breathe. He is truly God With Us.
Jesus — your Emmanuel — is dwelling within you. Consider what that means or feels like for you.
