Learning to De-Escalate

DAY 7 OF 7

On Little Things

Life is full of small annoyances that can chip away at your peace if you let them. Often, we don’t even notice how these minor frustrations—what I like to call “little entanglements”—can snowball into bigger arguments, creating unnecessary tension and division.

It could be something as trivial as a co-worker always leaving a mess in the meeting room, a child who never puts their toys away, a spouse leaving the toilet seat up, or a teenager glued to their phone all day. These aren’t earth-shattering issues, but if we don’t learn to de-escalate and let go of the little things, how can we handle the bigger challenges when they come?

Proverbs 19:11 gives us wise guidance:

“A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.”

Learning to let the small things slide is a way of showing grace to others and keeping our focus on what truly matters.

Think of these little moments as practice rounds that God gives us to develop patience and humility. They are opportunities to follow Philippians 2:3, which says:

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.”

By choosing not to react or escalate, we practice putting others before ourselves, as Christ did.

As Christians, we must also remember that Satan thrives in the little things, using them as footholds to sow discord and frustration. Ephesians 4:26-27 warns us:

“In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.”

When we allow minor annoyances to fester, we give the enemy room to disrupt our peace and relationships.

Next time you feel irritation creeping in over something small, pause and reflect. Is it worth your peace? Is it worth your joy? Let it go and leave it in God’s hands. As Colossians 3:15 reminds us:

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”

By letting go of the little things, you not only protect your heart but also create space for God’s peace to flourish in your life and relationships.
