Introduction

1 John 2:18–29: We saw in yesterday’s reading that John uses “the world” to name the disordered realm of evil, which is temporary, but eternal life is promised to those who do the will of God. Today the “enemies of Christ” are described, and John tells his readers to “obey the Spirit’s teaching” and “remain in union with Christ.”

Today’s Key Verse: 1 John 2:29

You know that Christ is righteous; you should know, then, that everyone who does what is right is God’s child.

Reflect

According to verses 18–23, who are the “enemies of Christ”? How do we recognize them? What is your understanding of the “truth” mentioned in verses 20 and 21? Reread verses 26 and 27. In what ways do you experience the “Spirit’s teaching”?

Lord Jesus, help me each day to follow your teachings and to hold fast to your truth. I want to live in union with you. Thank you for your promise of eternal life and for the assurance that I am God’s child. Amen.
