Biblical Leadership Series: Lead Like Nehemiah

DAY 3 OF 5

Doing God’s Work Brings Opposition

A godly leader understands that opposition is inevitable, especially when fulfilling a God-given calling. In the book of Nehemiah, we see how Sanballat and Tobiah mocked and ridiculed the people of Judah, trying to discourage them from completing their mission. But instead of responding with anger or retaliation, Nehemiah chose to pray, and the work continued unhindered. The key to overcoming opposition is prayer—prayer that brings both strength and strategy from the Lord to keep moving forward.

In Nehemiah 4:7-8, when the wall was halfway completed, Sanballat, Tobiah, and their allies grew even angrier. They escalated their attacks from insults to physical threats and plotted to disrupt the work and cause confusion. Yet, Nehemiah and the people responded with prayer and action. They not only prayed but also guarded the city, preparing for battle day and night. Nehemiah’s example shows us the importance of combining prayer with practical steps—staying vigilant and faithful to the work God has called us to do. Opposition should never be an excuse for neglecting the stewardship of the tasks God has entrusted to us.

Nehemiah 4 reminds us that prayer alone isn’t always the complete solution in times of opposition. While prayer is essential, we must also be alert and ready to act as God directs us, trusting that He will guide us through challenges.

Reflective Questions:

  • How do you respond to opposition in your leadership?
  • What can you learn from Nehemiah’s prayer life and his approach to handling opposition?

Prayer:

Lord, I thank you for the power of prayer! May you show me how to be a leader who is prayerful and watchful at all times knowing that the adversary is always on the prowl. Lord, I ask that you show me how to be a leader who is steadfast and immovable, always standing firm in the midst of opposition. In Jesus' name, amen.

About this Plan

Biblical Leadership Series: Lead Like Nehemiah

The book of Nehemiah shows us how the Lord can impact a nation through the prayers, perseverance and spiritual grit of one leader whose heart is aligned with God’s. The Prophet Nehemiah modeled for us the characteristics of a Godly leader, successfully leading the people in the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem. Nehemiah was a man of prayer, vision, perseverance, strategy, and courage. Let's take a look at what the Lord wants us to glean from the leadership of Nehemiah in this plan by Evangelist April Snell.
